Today, Thursday April 26, 2018 it has been published in the National Official Diary a new decree by which the tariff of government fees of the Mexican Patent Office (IMPI) is amended. New tariffs will be in force tomorrow Friday 27, 2018.

The main aim for making this was to include the new tariffs related to Geographical Indications, Indications of Origin and for renewal of Industrial Designs derived from the recent amendments to the IP Law, which entered in force this very same day, see our Newsletter No. 3 (March 2018), IMPI has taken this opportunity to amend the initial fees for filing patents, utility models and industrial designs, as well.

IMPI will start charging extra fees for the number of pages per application in excess of the first 30 pages, regarding Patents and Utility Model applications. In the case of the Industrial Designs applications, extra fees will apply for each of the additional embodiments contained in a single application. Same government fees will apply for any Divisional application in the three cases.

The rationale behind these new government fees is to standardize IMPI's tariff with the practices of the top international Patent Offices, including government fees. In order to minimize the impact of the new tariff regarding extra pages, IMPI has reduced the initial fee for filing patents, utility models and industrial designs.

The new tariffs are as follows:
